Benin The Voodoo Headquarters of Africa

History of the Voodoo Capital

The region of present-day Benin was home to several powerful kingdoms, with the Dahomey Kingdom (1600s–1800s) being the most influential. Dahomey was known for its fierce warriors, elaborate palaces, and active participation in the transatlantic slave trade. In the late 19th century, the French colonized the area, renaming it French Dahomey. Benin gained independence in 1960 and was renamed the Republic of Benin in 1975. Today, it is a stable democracy, rich in cultural heritage and traditions.
